It IS a well-worn phrase, isn&#039;t it?   &quot;How are ya&#039;?&quot;

Because it is, letting a friend know I&#039;m serious about asking about how they&#039;re doing right now takes a couple more words:

&quot;How are ya? -- Honest answer.&quot;    (and I wait - and smile)
or  &#039;I&#039;ve been praying - How are you?&quot;   
Usually they tell me.
