It IS a well-worn phrase, isn’t it? “How are ya’?”

Because it is, letting a friend know I’m serious about asking about how they’re doing right now takes a couple more words:

“How are ya? — Honest answer.” (and I wait – and smile)
or ‘I’ve been praying – How are you?”
Usually they tell me.
