Just surfing through and wanted to stop and say "great article!" I've been thinking much the same lately, that our society as a whole, the church included, has fallen for a cult of celebrity. In the church we're not so much believers as fans of the megachurches and megapreachers... and I believe that's a form of idolatry.

IMO true community is best found in the ancient concept of the "parish" church -- a church that is geographically, spiritually, and actively in the center of its town or region. Such a church does not have to be large (if it is, it should have a well-organized small group ministry to make it "feel" small) but it does need to have a focus that is outward to the surrounding area and not inward on itself.

My motto these days is "Small is the new big." IMO a small but mission-minded church can do far more for the Kingdom than a megachurch. Someday I hope to put my theories to the test in a parish ministry of my own. In the meantime blessings on yours!
