What if the World Ended Tomorrow?

By now you’ve probably heard that the world is supposed to end on Saturday, May 21. At least, that is the teaching and motivation for several churches and internet sites.

Most people shrug it off as typical cultish nonsense. Others take the time to study the information and write a response to it. And I’m sure there are many that still have not had the pleasure of hearing about it in the first place, but will on Sunday or Monday morning when they turn on the news and nothing has happened.

I wonder, though, if we have missed an opportunity to learn a great lesson. What if the world ended tomorrow? How would your life look today?

Book Review: “The Greener Grass Conspiracy” by Stephen Altrogge

What one thing do you wish you could have, or believe that if you had it your life would instantly change and you would be happy? Think really hard about that one thing, and then think about how you could rearrange your life to turn every effort towards that one goal.

Before you actually start that new way of life, you should know this: After all of the planning and the work and the time investing in getting that one thing you want, when you get it, you still won’t be happy.

Why? Because there is a conspiracy at work to keep you from being content. It’s a conspiracy that involves three parties, and one of those is your own heart.

Check out this trailer video for the book, and then read on for my review.

There’s Nothing Like A Good Rivalry

The NHL hockey playoffs started a few days ago, and that’s big news – if not the only news – in this part of the world. To everyone’s delight, the first round started with a bang.

One of the key elements to the excitement of a game, match or series in any sport is the Rivalry. The rival team or player is the sworn enemy of the loyal fan. We hurl insults at each pitchers, cheer on the defense, and cough during a golfer’s follow-through.

Book Review: “Imaginary Jesus”

home_coverOne of the most important ideas that we must grapple with, not just as Christians but as human beings, is our idea about God, our theology. Are you confident that your theology of God is correct? Is it biblical? Are you willing to trade it in for another theology of God?

When Matt Mikalatos is sitting in his favorite café, Jesus is sitting beside him. But when a gruff man named Pete comes in, everything changes. That’s not the real Jesus; it’s Matt’s version of Jesus, created by his own mind, custom-made to fit him and his needs. Oh, and he’s not the only imaginary Jesus out there.

Imaginary Jesus is Matt’s “not-so-true story” about how the Jesus he loves and serves is not the real Jesus. In fact, the real Jesus frightens him and confuses his ideas of who Jesus should be. But as much as he has trouble accepting the real Jesus, Matt realizes that he no longer wants to serve a false Jesus.

Being Sick And Not Knowing It, And Why We Let It Happen At Church

A week ago I followed my wife’s advice and went to the emergency room. I was battling my regular winter cold, feeling sick and tired of being sick and tired. That was last Tuesday. She had tried to get me to go on Friday. It was a cold with a cough. I get it every year. It was no big deal. Or so I thought.

After a round of tests and x-rays, I sat in an exam room waiting for the doctor, a woman from our church. The diagnosis was pneumonia. Fluid had built up in my lung so that it almost couldn’t take in any air. Oh, and the other lung had started to fill up as well. Double pneumonia. As I said on Facebook, “When I win, I win BIG.”

Book Brief: “Outlive Your Life” by Max Lucado

What will you be remembered for in life? Will it be the hours you worked? The number of proposals or presentations you made at work? The way you kept your lawn or the cleanliness of your house? Maybe it’s your bowling score or your ability to quote baseball statistics. How many of these things will really outlast your physical life?

“Outlive Your Life” begins with an amazing parable of a man whose life impacted a small culture. His impact outlasted him, and served as his legacy.

With our lives we have the ability to impact our world, our communities, our churches, our world. We have opportunities laid before us each and every day. Some of these require a lot of effort, others just require us to step into what God has prepared for us. But leaving a legacy doesn’t mean making a name for ourselves. We have to watch out that we are not seeking to promote ourselves instead of seeking to serve God.

Max is also sure to remind us that we are not just to be out being busy, doing activity and leaving it there. In the chapter, Pray First; Pray Most, he reminds us about the special promises regarding prayer.

The message of this book is one I have echoed myself over the years. As usual, Max is always on point, full of stories and anecdotes. If you enjoy Max’s work, you will not be disappointed. It is an encouragement for the average Christian to make an impact on many realms of society, each in our unique way.
